The North American gaming owl, Athene gamericularia, is a very rare specimen indeed. Colloquially known as the “nerd bird,” until recently all sightings were considered apocryphal. But in 2003 an amateur owl enthusiast painstakingly tracked a single Athene gamericularia specimen back to its Cheetos-stained nest in a darkened basement, and installed sensitive listening equipment.


She was shocked when she played back the tapes. Amid the typical sounds of nesting birds could be heard the slightest strain of music - world 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. - and a tiny, owlish voice saying “w00t w00t.”


Credible owling journals refused to publish her paper, she came to us and we made thes cool t-shirt.
